Nightshades are plants in the Solanaceae family, such as eggplants, peppers, potatoes, and tomatoes. These plants contain solanine which has been linked to joint inflammation and arthritis. There is a lot of controversy around whether or not nightshades cause inflammation, and part of that might be because the quantity of solanine varies drastically within these plants depending on growing conditions.
