Why this cocktail recipe works

Freshly squeezed lime, silver tequila and a dash of agave syrup all sing together while smoked mezcal adds depth and mystery to the overall flavor profile, keeping your taste buds intrigued.

The ingredients:

The recipe is pretty simple using just limes, tequila, agave and mezcal.

Mezcal Lime Margarita Ingredients: lime, mezcal, agave, tequila

This works best with

  • silver tequila
  • organic agave
  • aged mezcal
  • fresh squeezed lime juice

Limes

It is important to use fresh squeezed lime juice. A simple citrus juicer can make this go a lot quicker.

Purchased lime juice is thicker and often tangier so it might need to be watered down a tad. It will still taste good, but not as good as fresh squeezed lime juice.

Mezcal

The mezcal adds character and depth. It's the ingredient that makes this a little more interesting than a typical margarita. Like adding a third dimension to the flavor profile.

The best mezcal to use for this drink is an aged brown mezcal. However, silver mezcal will work as well. It just might have a less smoky and rich taste.

Making the mezcal lime margarita

Single or Double

You will mix 2 parts lime with 1 part each teuila and mezcal and add a squeeze of agave. Don't add too much! It can get too sweet real wuick.

Shake over ice and then pour into salt-rimmed glasses with big square ice cubes

Batched Mezcal Lime Margaritas

This is the same as a single or double, however you'll skip the shaker. Instead, use a long spoon and a pitcher.

You will mix 2 parts lime with 1 part each tequila and mezcal and a squeeze of agave over ice in a large pitcher.

Stir the margarita until all of the ingredients are combined and then pour into a container for later or into salt-rimmed glasses with big square ice cubes.

This is a great batched cocktail. For large parties just mix 2 parts lime juice to 1 part each tequila and mezcal. Stir in a pitcher with ice and then strain into a larger container (removing the ice) to save in the refrigerator until you are ready to serve.
