Nightshades are plants in the Solanaceae family, such as eggplants, peppers, potatoes, and tomatoes. These plants contain solanine which has been linked to joint inflammation and arthritis. There is a lot of controversy around whether or not nightshades cause inflammation, and part of that might be because the quantity of solanine varies drastically within these plants depending on growing conditions.
Regardless, some people may find that avoiding nightshades helps them feel better, especially those with autoimmune or inflammatory conditions. As always, do what works best for your body.
